Old Movies and Public Domain Torrents

Charlie Chaplin When you put aside your fears on the reach of US-based agencies and what they can do to you for downloading movies from torrent websites, you'll find there's a wealth of old movies that are free and legal to upload as well as download. The "Public Domain Torrents" website is just one place where you can get classic movies of all kinds and some are not that old. I'm not telling you do to something you believe to be illegal; I'm just pointing you to places to go if you're not concerned about it.

Other Sources of Old Movies

Whoever runs Public Domain Torrents should take a look at SuperFundo's SiriusShare area. While Public Domain Torrents lists 974 movies (at the time of this writing), there are way more over on SuperFundo. That's where I found "The Amazing Colossal Man", a cheesy B-Movie from 1957.

Personally, I don't have the time to watch old movies, or television for that matter. I spend the majority of my waking time doing online activities. I'm that horse of a different color you've heard so much about. Very few people behave as I do and really spend a lot of time watching old movies and TV shows. For the people that do spend the time, there is so much available from online sources that it's simply ridiculous.

Download Safety

If you do a search, using Google or Yahoo or whatever, you can find website services that track millions of torrent files. Some are good and some are not so good. Some are even dangerous to go to, easily infesting your computer with spyware and adware and other nastiness. How do you know what's what without getting burnt first? Well, I can't tell you that because I really don't know. I have some good advice for you, though.

Make sure you have good antivirus and anti-malware (spyware, adware, etc.) programs installed on your computer, especially if you're running any version of Microsoft Windows. Make sure you keep them up-to-date. There's really no need to pay for expensive programs when most of the free programs will do the job quite nicely.

If you want to take your chances because keeping programs like this up-to-date seems like it takes too much time, well, you may end up spending even more of your time exercising Microsoft spyware removal tactics. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, or so they say.

If you simply can't, or refuse to keep you anti-everything programs up-to-date, you have one more option. I recommend it as a last resort, particularly if you think your programs aren't catching something or they aren't removing something they should. You can use online spyware removal products as well as online antivirus products. Many of them are free to use but a little cumbersome. The services you pay for work pretty well, but like I said, you don't need to be doing that.

Back on Topic, Sort of

As I've already mentioned, there's a wealth of old movies available online and from quite a few sources. If you download only, you'll stay off the radar of any agency looking to sue people for copyright infringement. Don't use network-style programs to do it either, because you can't control the process and may end up uploading files or sharing folders on your computer without even knowing it.

Please practice safe downloading, regardless if it's old movies or free software or whatever. Use the available programs to keep your computer safe. There are way too many people out there with nothing better to do than to screw you up.

I am not really into old movies or any mainstream movie in general but I do love what you have done with this post. I've always practiced safe downloading and I think I'm gonna try (for the first time) to download a movie, and an old one at that.

  2. I always say that antivirus software is not enough for safe browsing, irrespectively of the program vendor. In fact, most popular AV's are not that good at blocking various threats. The latter are so smart these days that easily bypass resident antivirus shields and damage AV engines (Virtumonde is a notorious example of such pests). It is very recommended to have at least SpyBot to compensate the lacunae of antivirus monitors, and do regular scans with some other security program (there's a bunch of free online virus scanners that provide such services).

i agree there are many free and totally legit torrents out there, movies released to the public domain, copyfree photo's and music that artists willingly upload to promote there music and software such as linux ubuntu releases. lets not forget that not ALL torrents are illegal nor illegal to download or distribute.

one question though, if a person downloaded an DRM free album from itunes store legally paid for, that person would not own a physical copy of the media. what happens when that person no longer wishes to own that album and wishes to sell it secondhand to the public? how can the authorities prove it is not secondhand? public are legally allowed to sell media secondhand and for profit too without paying royalties? have the authorities built a wall they cannot break down?
